Welcome to the Charters Towers School of Distance Education

Our school provides quality education to children and others who for many reasons need access to an individualised program. People of all ages choose distance education for a variety of factors. Details on eligibility for studying by distance education are available on our enrolments page.

Charters Towers is in North Queensland, just 135 km inland from Townsville, 1647km from Brisbane. Our students however are spread throughout the state, country and world.

Our school was the first Distance Education school to open in Queensland in 1987 and still leads in the use of technology to enable communication with our students and their tutors. We use traditional means of communication like mail and telephone as well as audio-teleconferencing, video, television and the Internet to cross the barriers of distance and create the bonds of a school community.

Where possible, face-to-face contact with students is achieved through many activities including visits to the School, outreach activity days, mini-schools, home visits, workshops, camps and excursions. Coming events are included on our School Diary.

Students make use of current telecommunications methods to remain in contact with teachers and to explore their pathways of learning.
